SOCIAL DEMOCRACY SOCIETY
METU Social Democracy Society, in accordance with METU Student Activities Regulation, adressed in METU-Ankara, to operate in control of Cultural Affairs Directorate, was founded in December 2003 which is the first and only legal social democratic organization established after 1980 at Turkish Universities.
PURPOSES AND ACTIVITIES
METU Social Democracy Society;bases itself to Social Democracy which always evolves to survive,far away from determined and solid ideologies but with its dynamic structure aims to enlarge people’s scope about the modern world affairs;and in our country’s experiment in the light of Atatürk Revolutions;which flames reason,science,progress;acts according to the frame of these principles.
Participatory democracy,fair income distribution, social state,social justice,social cooperation,holiness of labour,struggle against ecological problems,importance of technological innovation and sustainable development,equality,pluralism,global peace,human rights,superiority of law,equality of opportunities,social sensibility and productive market economy are the main principles of Social Democracy.While struggling against inequalities rooted in society and transforming them with reforms Social Democracy are opposed to all forms of tyrany at the same time assimilated democracy to bring peace to society,an action which placed ‘human’ at the core and above all with its benevolent style it is a cultural accumulation.
Activities which synthesize participatory democracy with critical overlook are our first manifesto of objectives.With this purpose;
1- METU Social Democracy Society, in line with universal principles of social democracy as mentioned above, aims to make people think for unemployment,poverty,income inequality;trying to educate students who thinks socially before individually,giving importance to national independence,social solidarity and ethics and above all helping our university improve its education quality.
2- METU Social Democracy Society aims to cope with problems of , compartmentalisation ; individualism, selfishness and being blindfold in beliefs; not discussing in contrast not to be able to discuss; and to achieve these ends giving students chances to express their thoughts in a democratic environment and is an organization which encourages participation in a consensual and didactic manner; targets to improve meaningful discussion environment in a pluralist and in the framework of public order.
3- METU Social Democracy Society who is targeting to train people who are questioning, who give importance to the superiority of mind, who knows his/her responsibility in the development of his/her country without ignoring the main elements as especially education, health, who are free in mind, free in body; determine, as an another aim, the provision of that students become interested in their environment and become citizens with conscious.
4- The provision of the social, artful, cultural improvement of our friends by making associated activities with different foundations, associations and civil societal organizations, is another aim.
5- Through the aims which mentioned above, the activities which METU Social Democracy Society is planning to make; seminars in community which will be illuminative, social sensibility in university, to arrange panels directed towards to improve the understanding of ethics and responsibility, to arrange cultural and artful activities; moreover, in order to make contribution to the international peace, by also considering our national interests, to arrange international student platforms and to make strategic researches directed towards both the problems of our country and theoretical dimension of social democracy.
